Dodge Charger Super Bee 2023

Aug 31, 2022 at 1:10pm ET

The second of seven Dodge special edition models honoring the end of current Challenger and Charger production is here. The Dodge Charger Super Bee is back for a curtain call as part of the automaker's Last Call for its enduring modern muscle machines.

The last time we saw Super Bee branding on the Dodge Charger was back in 2014. For 2023, Dodge says the new buzz-worthy Charger offers the highest level of performance ever seen in a Super Bee, packing the V8 punch from the Charger Scat Pack with standard street-legal drag tires for having fun at the strip. To refresh your memory, Scat Pack models feature the naturally aspirated 6.4-liter Hemi making 485 horsepower (362 kilowatts), sent to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Super Bee will only be offered on 2023 Charger Scat Pack trims.

While there are no changes to the engine, the Super Bee does get the aforementioned drag radials for grip at the strip. On the regular Scat Pack Super Bee, the tires are 275s mounted on 20-inch wheels. The Scat Pack Widebody actually gets smaller 18-inch wheels but wider 315 rubber. The Charger's adaptive suspension features a drag mode, and in keeping with an old-school muscle car theme, Dodge adds an SRT hood with functional scoops and hood pins. Black exhaust tips exit the rear, and behind the wheels you'll see red Brembo brakes.

Naturally, you can't have a special edition model without graphics and badges. The 2023 Dodge Charger Super Bee is easily identified by a badge in the grille and bee badges on the front fenders. If you miss those, you likely won't miss the graphics on the hood or the bold stripes on the back doors and quarter panels, the latter of which actually say Super Bee. Moving inside, there are more Super Bee logos on the seat backs and a badge for the instrument panel.

More Charger And Challenger News:

As with the Challenger Shakedown special edition, Dodge will only build 1,000 Super Bees in total. 500 will be Scat Pack models with a B5 Blue exterior. The other 500 will be in Scat Pack Widebody spec painted Plum Crazy. Pricing will be announced when order banks open later in the fall.

From here on out, Dodge will debut a new Last Call Charger or Challenger every Wednesday until the six main models are revealed. The seventh and final debut will take place at the 2022 SEMA show. As Dodge makes its slow march towards its "E-Muscle" future, it has been looking back at its past with several "Last Call" editions to give its gas-powered Charger and Challenger models a send-off in style. The first "Last Call" model was the 2023 Dodge Challenger Shakedown, recalling a 2016 concept based on a 1971 Chally. Now the Charger is up, and it's getting a proper Super Bee treatment just as the original 1968-1970 Dodge Coronet-based one did. While that doesn't mean Dodge is bringing back the B-body, it does mean the LD Charger is getting the street-and-strip treatment with drag radials on real strip-ready wheels, Drag Mode, and a functional hood scoop for the Scat Pack and Scat Pack Widebody versions.

If you were originally excited to see Dodge bring back the Super Bee name, only to be disappointed at its lack of true drag racing accoutrement, well today is your day. The 2023 Dodge Charger Super Bee is more than just a name, badging, decals, and special exterior color this time around. It will, however, be limited to just 1,000 examples made, with 500 going to the Scat Pack in B5 Blue and 500 going to the Scat Pack Widebody in Plum Crazy. It comes with unique exterior badging on the grille and front fenders along with decals on the hood, and rear fenders in blue for the B5 Blue and white for the Plum Crazy. While that doesn't make these Super Bees any more functional, the rest will.

First up, these Super Bees are coming straight from the factory floor with a set of drag radials that will help you launch harder for some impressive ETs. The regular Scat Pack version gets them on 20x9.5 knurled wheels (to help it grip the bead of the tire) with 275 width drag radials, and the Scat Pack Widebody gets the true fat tire treatment with 18x11 drag wheels using 315 width drag radials. Hey, it's got the widebody, why not stuff the rear wells with meaty tires? While this alone would be a great way to honor the original Super Bee tradition, that's not the only thing this modern buzzer will get.

For improved performance under the hood of the supercharged Hemi V-8, an SRT hood is installed with a functional scoop, dual heat extractors, and secured with a Mopar hood pin kit in black. For some improved sound and better looks, the SRT exhaust tips are painted black. The active damping suspension of the Charger Super Bee is further programmed with a new Drag Mode to improve the weight transfer for hard quarter-mile blasts, but you also get a set of red four-piston Brembo brakes to get you hauled down at the end of your run. Inside, you'll also get more Super Bee callouts with a unique badge on the instrument panel and logos on the seat backs.

The 2023 Dodge Charger Super Bee will be available during Springtime of 2023 and pricing will be announced in this fall. The next "Last Call" model will be announced on September 7, with the models after that announced until September 21. The final "Last Call" model will be revealed during the celebration of all things performance: the 2022 SEMA Show at Las Vegas that takes place on November 1-4.
