How many UK bank holidays are there in 2023?

Us Brits love a bank holiday, as it gives us an extra few days to enjoy some downtime and take a break from work. As they often tend to fall either side of a weekend, it also gives people the opportunity to enjoy a short trip away - without having to use up any annual leave.

Then, of course, there are those savvy workers that use the bank holidays to bookend holidays, meaning they get extra time off work without having to book too many days off. As a national public holiday, the are spread across the calendar, giving workers something to look forward to throughout the year.

Now, the dates of next year's bank holidays have been confirmed, which means that you can get planning. With the coronation of King Charles III, there will also be one extra in 2023.

As we have come to expect of our bank holidays, next year's will be no different in that most shops will close, as will schools and many places of business. Public transport is also often reduced on bank holidays, which can be a hassle when there are loads of people wanting to get away for a daytrip.

This year, there are two bank holiday left: Monday, December 26 (Boxing Day) and Tuesday, December 27 (substitute Christmas Day). It is the norm to get a 'substitute' bank holiday when Christmas falls on a weekend day, the Manchester Evening News reports.

It is the same for New Year and, as New Year's Day falls on Sunday, January 1, 2023, this means that there will be a substitute bank holiday on Monday, January 2. Meanwhile, Easter next year is being celebrated in early April and both Good Friday and Easter Monday are bank holidays, as they usually are.

In May, there will be three bank holidays - with the extra being due to King Charles III's coronation. This will fall on Monday, May 8. Downing Street have officially confirmed the date of the holiday, which takes place two days after the crowning at Westminster Abbey.

Below are all the bank holidays for next year, as well as those that are left for this year...
