When we compile the results from all of our tests and compare two Xeon E5-2687Ws to two Xeon X5680s, we see that the E5s are, on average about 21% faster.

Some of those tests aren’t good representations of what a professional would do on a workstation, though. Lame is in there explicitly to show the difference between these CPUs with a single core active, for example. The compression tests are pretty lightweight, and the transcoding tests don’t really necessitate a dual-processor machine. So, let’s take all of that out and see where we end up:

Now we’re closer to a 23% improvement. Euler3D skews the E5’s advantage quite a bit, but so do curiously-low numbers from Blender’s new cycles rendering engine and the SolidWorks 2010 render.

Regardless, more than 20% is significant for money-making applications.

I am thinking about picking up an older workstation to use for some virtualization. I have about 4 choices at the moment. Ideally I would like to stay under $300.

The first and cheapest option is a Dell T3500 with a Xeon X5670 6C/12T @ 2.93ghz for about $200USD.

The second option is a HP Z600 with 2 x Xeon X5647 (or 5667) 8C/16T @ 2.8ghz (or 2.93ghz) for between $250-300 USD.

The third option is an HP Z420 with a Xeon E5-2680 8C/16T @ 2.8ghz for about $300USD.

The 4th option and the most expensive is the HP Z600 with eon X5670 12C/24T @ 2.93ghz for around $350. However, the second X5670 wouldn't be added until at least next month.

Realistically I may have 4 vms going at once with a server or two and maybe two desktops. This is really just for a lab and to experiment and have fun with. No serious work will likely be done on it. What do guys think? Which would you choose? There is also the 5th option of Zen in October but I don't really want to wait that long and I am expecting prices well above $350 to get the components I will need.

You will get more power for your money if you go 2x 5600's and OC them, they can hit 4ghz close to stock volts.

Pick the system that takes the most Ram, because you will need it with VM's.

As far as I know, overclocking will not be an option because of them being Dell or HP workstations.

Both will able to hold all the memory I can afford.

Too Difficult to find.

The only one that i found it's in Nevada, it costs 400$+, money it's not an issue but I don't like to buy hardwares that are overseas.

Ps Its a correct Answer

That's Because they have not been made for years and most of those sold were overclocked and Liq Ni to Death in attempted overclocking Records

You want one ( a 2p Overclockable Board that's GOOD ) then you have to hunt the internet or forums and PAY WHAT IS ASKED from where its located

sorry if this peeve's you but that's life

Yup and I happened to have 2 setups just sitting in my garage that I used to fold with

Back to the topic, I'm not too familiar with the performance of the newer Xeons but as someone already pointed out the dual 1366 setup should be more than sufficient (if not overkill)

I said, money isn't an issue, I found one but they don't ship to EU.

So sánh chip e5 2600 và e5600 năm 2024

or you can SWEET TALK ONE of our american members into receiving a delivery and then forwarding it to you That is if money is not really a consideration (via Extra postage and insurance )

If performance was going to be important, I would say that the dual quads on skt1366 is a pretty good deal however, since this is for a lab and for experimenting, I suggest going with the E5 because it's going to consume less power at idle and will be far quieter while you're working on it, even at full tilt. However, feature-wise, they're all about the same. I personally would go with the E5 setup.
