Holding PyCon US 2023 in Salt Lake City, UT

In light of recent anti-abortion legislation, we have received feedback and concern about hosting PyCon US 2023 in Salt Lake City, Utah. We hear this concern and recognize the risk and impact these laws impose on people who can become pregnant. PyCon US plans to take extra efforts to create a safe and inclusive environment throughout the duration of the conference, including extending our “no questions asked” refund or conversion to a virtual ticket for any reason, right up to the start of the event.

PyCon US is a community conference centered around creating a valuable and inclusive experience for each member of our community to network and collaborate within the open source space. Diversity, equity and inclusion are an important focus of PyCon US and the Python Software Foundation’s mission, and they are valued and implemented through both the PyCon US and PSF Code of Conduct and Diversity Statement. PyCon US values each member of our community, and welcomes all individuals to participate regardless of age, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, ethnicity, nationality, race, or religion (or lack thereof), education, or socio-economic status.

Organizing a large event like PyCon US takes many years of planning and preparation, with host city selection starting three to four years before the event. The potential location starts with a thorough evaluation of the city, combined with our best estimates for conference size and needs. It is through our team’s advanced planning strategy that we are able to provide the unique and valuable experience that our community deserves. Due to the prohibitive financial loss the PSF would incur to cancel or change the current contract with the Salt Palace Convention Center and local hotels, not to mention finding an alternative venue, PyCon US 2023 will go on as planned in Salt Lake City. We understand that some community members may feel hesitant about joining us in Salt Lake City this year and hope that anyone not comfortable with attending in person will consider joining us at PyCon US 2023 virtually.

The PyCon US team will be researching local Salt Lake City organizations who support and provide resources to women, girls, and people from marginalized genders to team up with in order to promote inclusion and make the most of our community’s presence while in Salt Lake City. Feel free to make suggestions by emailing ! PyCon US aims to empower all members of our community and foster a positive experience for all who participate.

We welcome and request input from the community on ways PyCon US can make an impact and create a safe environment for our attendees at PyCon US 2023. If you have any ideas or suggestions, or any questions about PyCon US, contact us by emailing .

Moving Forward

As mentioned before, PyCon US selects host cities beginning three to four years before the event with PyCon US 2024 and PyCon US 2025 contracted to take place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The PyCon US team will begin host city selection for 2026-2027 this year and will be selecting a host city based upon these criteria. In addition, the PyCon US team will take local health care restrictions into consideration as well as any prevailing attitudes that could negatively affect the experience of our attendees. Our team will evaluate whether the state and city policies are non-discriminatory, safe, and inclusive for all, including people who can become pregnant, trans people and other members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and everyone else in our Python community. As learned through the planning of PyCon US 2023, we will move forward keeping in mind the challenge that policies and legislation can change from when the city is selected to the actual conference dates given the constantly changing political climate.

The PyCon US team would love to hear where our community would like to see PyCon US 2026 and PyCon US 2027 take place. Email to share your suggestions as well as any additional feedback for what we can do to ensure an inclusive, safe, and welcoming environment for all.

Announcing the Location for PyCon US 2022/2023

We’re planning for PyCon US 2022 and 2023 to be held in-person.

It may seem strange to announce an in-person conference in the middle of a global pandemic, so let’s start by explaining why:

Usually, we announce PyCon US host cities shortly after we’ve made our selection, and this year we hoped to make this announcement during the close of PyCon US 2020 in Pittsburgh. Instead, the immediate future of PyCon changed. We quickly cancelled the in-person portion of PyCon US 2020, and moved PyCon US 2021 to a fully-online event.

None of this changed our plans for 2022, because we made these plans in 2019. We seek out host cities many years in advance of PyCon US so that we can find space to hold a 10-day event with 3500 attendees on dates that do not clash with major holidays and religious observances. We found our host city, and signed contracts and paid deposits with venues, caterers, hotels, and other vendors in Q3 2019, months before the Pandemic had started. Those contracts are still in place.

So, as long as the situation in the US makes it safe to hold an in-person event in 2022, PyCon US 2022 will be held in person.

Of course, we’ll be monitoring the situation closely, and we’ll change our plans if we need to, but we’re hoping that it’ll be safe to see many of you in person, and we’re excited to be able to welcome you to our first in-person event in three years.

We are pleased to announce the location for PyCon US 2022 and 2023 will be Salt Lake City, Utah at the Salt Palace Convention Center.

Finding a welcoming host city

As part of our selection process for host cities, we work to ensure that our chosen location will be safe and welcoming for our diverse and international community. As part of our selection process we reach out to groups in the local industry, as well as representatives from groups that support people of demographics who are marginalised within our community.

Our research satisfied us that Salt Lake City will provide a safe and welcoming location for our community.

Jeanetta Williams, President, NAACP Salt Lake Branch & Tri-State Conference of Idaho, Nevada and Utah-Former Member, NAACP National Board of Directors provided this feedback:

“Salt Lake City hosted the 1991 Gospel Music Workshop of America, bringing more than 10,000 African Americans, National Brotherhood of Skiers, bringing more than 5,000 and the 2002 Winter Olympics bringing in 78 nations and most recently, we hosted the NAACP National Board of Directors, May, 2018 with Board Members, Chairman of the Board, President and CEO, staff and friends that attended.”

In addition, we spoke with Nubia Peña, Director, Utah Division of Multicultural Affairs, who provided helpful information about the diversity efforts of their partners and leaders within their multicultural community.

Claudia Loayza, Utah Division of Multicultural Affairs, Special Projects and Community Engagement Coordinator, also provided information about the ongoing work community organizations and her own division is doing to elevate multicultural voices and further equity and inclusion.

There are also many initiatives pertaining to diversity in Salt Lake City:

  • It is LGBTQ friendly with many resources throughout the city: https://www.visitsaltlake.com/about-salt-lake/lgbt-friendly-salt-lake/
  • Salt Lake City is also making efforts to increase racial diversity: https://www.visitsaltlake.com/about-salt-lake/community-diversity/

Visiting Salt Lake City

Python conference 2023

Salt Lake City International Airport is well connected through most major airlines to the West Coast and US hubs, and also serves as a major hub for Delta and its international partner airlines. The airport is linked to the city’s Trax Light Rail system, and a one-way fare downtown from the airport costs $2.50.

Salt Lake City has many activities to offer both for the outdoors enthusiasts as well as those who enjoy the inside attractions.

  • The Great Outdoors: Salt Lake City, Utah, sits in a mountain bowl 4,300 feet up, with immediate access to all forms of adventure: four world-class ski resorts 45 minutes from Salt Lake International Airport (with 10 more outside city limits); a lineup of slanty canyons to the east with a hundred options for hiking, biking, climbing and camping; a Great Salty Lake to the west for boating and floating; and there’s golf, too, for you golfers. (content from VisitSaltLake)
  • Indoor Salt LakeThere are plenty of indoor things to do in Salt Lake City, too: concert venues for crowds of 20 to 20,000; restaurants repping all corners of the globe and a burgeoning foodie scene at small-market prices; blockbuster theaters and art house indies; ballet, opera, orchestra and theatre worthy of much less convenient metropolises; museums; malls; and pro basketball, soccer, baseball and hockey. There’s even a happening nightlife (“even” because some people expect a night out in Utah to be as dry as the air). (content from VisitSaltLake)

Mark your calendars - we hope to see you in SLC for PyCon US 2022/2023!
