How beautiful is this limited edition cushion case!?! I love it! Honestly, if I was to splurge on luxury brands i’d always go for the LE packaging~ Thankfully I managed to snatch this baby up during a sale on the YSL website for almost half price! (ladies & gents, always wait for a sale if possible~!!) but incase you can’t you can find this cushion on Sephora and it retails for $75 CAD.

So, what makes this cushion so special compared to others?? The cushion puff! Just like sponge applications vs. brush applications, it would only make sense for the finishes to be different if you used different sponge materials, right? But how well did the different 2 sided puff really perform??

^ As you can see, side 1 is supposed to be for a “natural” finish while side 2 is a “sophisticated” finish. (Tbh i’m no sure what that’s supposed to mean….)

One side is a velvety texture with longer fibers (personally, I didn’t like using this side to apply…it just weirds me out and there were slight streaks) and the other side was more like your typical cushion puff. (I preferred this side much more but honestly, it was hard to only use half the sponge to apply the cushion…

…I kinda hated this puff. I replaced it with my Armani cushion puff (I like applications much better this way)

Unlike normal cushions with just a sponge inside, this one is similar to he Armani cushion in the sense that here’s a mesh/netting layer and instead of those soft sponges we’re used to this one was more dense and had larger pores if that make sense.

Shade: I got shade B20 Ivory (the 2nd lightest shade) and it was a very nice match. I would say a little more on the pink side.

Coverage: I would say this has is fairly sheer upon first application but it’s a good build-able medium coverage. You might need some concealer if you have very intense dark circles or angry blemishes but for the most part. it’s fairly good.

Finish: This cushion has a fairly natural finish. I wouldn’t say it’s very dewy but it’s also no matte. It didn’t cling on to any of my dry patches and felt hydrating for the most part. I really enjoy using this cushion but for some reason I feel like i go through this way faster then some of my other cushions.

**But do note that there is a slightly strong floral scent upon first application. It does go away after a while but if you’re sensitive to scents you might not like this.

Final Verdict

I would probably give this cushion 3.5/5 ★

Was it amazing? No, not really…but it was good and i did enjoy using it. For the price, I feel like i liked the Armani cushion more. So, I probably won’t be repurchasing this cushion. If anything, i’d probably go for the foundation from this line instead next time.

I have this unfounded and biased love for YSL the brand, be it their leather goods or their beauty products. I have no idea why – it must be the sexay gold packagings that have dazzled me bonkers. Heh.

Now, the official spiel about the puff:

I say…

The Packaging: A square compact with a glossy gold casing (which is a massive fingerprint magnet). It comes with the usual tray-airlock, but I find that the compact casing has slight difficulty in closing completely – it just doesn’t click into place easily and I have to use some effort. Note that it tends to get leaky if you store it on its side, so make sure you only store it flat.

The Scent: A wonderful fragrance that’s a good mix of floral and fruity – if this were an actual fragrance I’d be first in line to purchase it (I have the same sentiments for the scent of Laneige’s Layering Cover Cushion). Too bad it dissipates within a few minutes of application.

The Application/Finish: To be really honest, I have no idea what is a “sophisticated finish (see the above official spiel from the brand). Also, what is customisable radiance? The formula has mostly been set in stone, and I highly doubt the application can affect the finish (not unless you set with mattifying/glow powder/primer). It’s like saying you can get a matte and glossy finish with a lipstick as long as you apply it with a different applicator, which makes no sense. As an English editor, that really sounds like a lot of fluff about nothing – a bunch of words thrown together but with no specific meaning – and this comes from a massive avid fan of the brand. Hmph. Rant aside, this does give a beautiful natural and brightened finish – you can barely spot the makeup on the skin (even with multiple layers), which is very commendable. When freshly applied, it seems mostly matte, but in just half an hour or so, it sets into a semi-dewy finish. There’s also a cooling and comfortable sensation when you apply it to your skin.

The Verdict: This cushion foundation gives a really beautiful and natural finish, providing medium coverage without caking – it’s really got quite an awesome natural finish (your skin, but better). That said, it doesn’t have much oil control (which means it doesn’t bode well for holders of combi-oily skintypes like yours truly), and it also means it cannot hold up for long in hot and humid climates. The fancy schmancy puff that gives “two finishes” doesn’t impress me much either – I find myself using the puff in its entirety, and there really isn’t much difference in the finish. Overall, a product that’ll work really, really well on those with drier skintypes, or perhaps when I’m overseas in drier climates.
