Michigan waitlist 2023

Being waitlisted isn’t as crushing a result as being rejected, but it can feel like you’ve been exiled to admissions purgatory. It’s important to know if your waitlisted status means you still have a serious shot at being admitted to your first-choice university or if it’s the equivalent of a Powerball ticket. For example, at Middlebury, Brandeis, Georgetown, Tulane, and UPenn somewhere between zero and 20 students are likely to be plucked from the waitlist. On the other hand, Colorado College, Cornell, Lehigh, Williams, and William & Mary all took more than 60 students off of their waitlists. The following table indicates waitlist statistics at some of America’s most selective colleges and universities for the 2019-20 academic year.

Michigan waitlist 2023
For those of you that have been waitlisted at one of your top choices, here's a list of 2018 waitlist statistics for several popular private and public schools, along with notification dates and latest status where available.

Our sample of waitlist statistics from 138 private and public institutions paints the following picture:

  • On average, 11 percent of students accepting a place on a waitlist were admitted
  • 71 percent of the schools admitted 10 percent or less of the students accepting a place on the wait list last year
  • 57 percent of the schools admitted 5 percent or less
  • 24 percent admitted no one

There are several factors driving the low rates, including the size of the waitlist (often very large), and how well a school anticipates its admissions yield.

How likely is it to get off the waitlist at Michigan?

But at many selective institutions, waitlist admittance rates tend to be lower than the regular admittance rates. For example, at the University of Michigan, the regular admissions rate for the class of 2018 was 23.5 percent, while a mere 1.6 percent were admitted off the waitlist.

How many people get waitlisted at Michigan?

10 Universities Where It's Hard to Get Off the Waitlist.

What percent of waitlisted applicants get accepted?

According to a 2019 National Association for College Admissions Counseling report, 43% of colleges use waitlists. Half of the students offered a spot on a waitlist accepted it, and colleges on average admitted 20% of students off the waitlist. At the most selective institutions, that figure was 7%.

How does waitlist work at University of Michigan?

Waitlists are created at the discussion-section level, not the lecture-section level. If the course fills, and if an enrolled student then drops the course, the vacated place is offered automatically, by e-mail, to the first person on the waitlist for the dropped discussion-section. The offer is valid for 48 hours.
