I tried the lens for a bit, couldn't get over the very slow AF, sent it back to the seller, did you experience similarly slow AF?

Well, I don't know but my Tamron SP 24-135's AF is just fine, I think. Not ultra fast, but OK. However, perhaps the expectations of its functionality differ.

Possibly, But put up against my Pentax FA 28-105mm F3.2-4.5 and Pentax FA 28-105mm F4-5.6 IF (Tamron Clone) it was notably slower, in fact likely the slowest AF lens I'd ever encountered aside from dying SDM lenses. Perhaps the one i tried had a flaw that yours doesn't. The one i had was slow end to end and at the tele end it would step-step-step-step when it was nearly in focus making you wonder when it would actually finally lock. (who knows there could even be an early and later model versions that the public doesn't know about)

I am going to get (within a couple of days) Tamron 28-105/4-5.6 IF (for PK mount). Then I can do some AF speed comparison between these.

I really like Tamron SP 24-135, but unfortunately my copy is somewhat optically decentric.

However I can see still its great potential. It can be sharp lens with nice contrast.

Ari

Nice photos.

I used this lens during film days and found it weak at the long end. Is there a new, digital version of this lens? Perhaps a digital version is better?

Are there any recent reviews of this lens?

Thanks,

Joe

I have also Sigma 28-135mm f/3.8-5.6 Aspherical IF Macro (CLICK) and it is quite a softer at every focal lenght than this Tamron 24-135mm f/3.5-5.6 AD Aspherical IF Macro SP AF (CLICK) .

Tamron has "AD" nomination in its name. Maybe it means some kind of digital compatibility, I'm not sure... EDIT: No, it means ANOMALOUS DISPERSION

In any case I feel Tamron SP 24-135 pretty good lens with K-1, also at 135mm.

I have the Tamron, and I was really pleased with it on my K-30. My focussed quite quickly or at least not slowly and no awkward stepping. For walkaround, I wanted something wider and WR, so I got the DA 18-135. The DA 18-135 is indeed wider and WR and also somewhat smaller/lighter, so it has become my standard walkaround. I did not, however, get rid of the Tamron. It can beat the DA 18-135 for sharpness and general IQ at every FL (except the long end where both are similar). Should I ever have the chance to go full-frame, this Tamron is the lens I'll use. (I did an unscientific comparison of the Tamron 24-135 and DA 18-135 HERE .)

Couple of more...

Couple of more with Tamron SP 24-135 (+K-1)...

As I wrote above, unfortunately my copy of this lens is optically decentric. Center is sharp, and also left side, but right side somewhat softer :-I

You can see it from these samples..

38mm, f/6.3

80mm, f/5.6

103mm, f/6.3

135mm, f/6.3

...that decentricty is really a shame, because I want to like that lens, but it's hard to find model for PK mount... Good copy of Tamron SP 24-135 could be my main all-around zoom with fullframe K-1. It is so good that I even acquired a Nikon version (easier to find for cheap price) and I'm trying to change the optical parts between Nikon and my PK models!! ...Or if it is too difficult, I will ask help from my local camera service

cheers,

Ari

So it seems, that I'm not the only one who likes the Tamron

Mike, it must have had a problem. Mine is fast to focus, faster than my FA 28-105mm F3.2-4.5 or my Tamron 28-105mm F4-5.6 IF. The fast, positive focusing is one of the reasons I like it so much. Of course it's larger than either of the above lenses but the zoom range is also significantly greater and I do like the very good IQ.

Good to hear, my FA28-105mm F3.2-4.5 was beating it hands down, the seller figured it was normal. Maybe the next time i see one cheap i'll consider picking it up again but for the moment the FA28-105mm F3.2-4.5 is suiting me quite well.

Well, good luck.

At least we know that Pentax is not the only manufacturer to produce decentered lenses.

...Still like Tamron SP 24-135 3.5-5.6 with K-1...

Hi,

I still like my Tamron SP 24-135 3.5-5.6 with fullframe camera, even more than what I did like Tamron 28-105 IF zoom with K-1.

I love:

- range, especially 24mm wide end.

- close focus performance

- overal image quality

- zoom lock

Here are some my recent photos with Tamron SP 24-135mm and Pentax K-1. Enjoy (comments welcome)

My Tamron 24-135 is very sharp on my K-1 with fast, quiet autofocus. My copy is very good optically ie centered. This range is what Pentax should have as a standard zoom vs 28-105. I was really surprised how sharp this lens was at all focal lengths.

I agree with your findings and thoughts about it.

Of course it's not perfect lens optically (some soft edges on fullframe), but overall very useful zoom and produces pleasant pictures with nice contrast, colours and sharpness.

I said it earlier, but I love 24mm wide end

BTW - some max.aperture values at different focal lenghts (Tamron SP24-135):

24mm: f/3.5

28mm: f/4

35mm: f/4

50mm: f/4.5

65mm: f/4.5

70-135mm: f/5.6

Re: MORE!

I had 2 of those lenses in the past, one in the film era in Minolta A for my late wifes camera when I was shooting the Maxxum 9 and one in my early digital days with the Pentax *ist D. I liked it as a travel lens, however my impressions were that it worked better on the crop factor than FF. Since then I acquired a Pentax FA 24-90/3.5-4.5 which I consider a better lens although with less reach. Not to mention I still have my FA 28-70/4 which, while exhibiting the usual looseness in early AF lens, has excellent optics (and no lens separation issues) plus my Sigma 24-60/2.8 EX DG which was a hidden gem even in the crop factor only days (and has digital coatings). I agree the Tamron 24-135 focused a little slower than some other lenses but its not an action lens so it works fine most of the time. Its slow aperture above 70mm seemed to make some shots difficult indoors such as at museums and galleries that require no-flash shooting. One reason I acquired the Sigma 24-60/2.8 for indoor work (even if I had to move closer due to the reach). Still the 24-135 is a positively useable lens if you get a good copy.

Of course it can give better overall sharper images with APS-C camera, as APS-C sensor uses only the best area of the FF lens (and crop edge areas away)...However you can crop from FF frame too, 36mp of K-1 gives room for cropping quite nicely.

But edge/corner performance of Tamron SP 24-135 is not so bad on fullframe sensor. Stopping down also helps when you need really sharp edges. For example using f/8 improve significantly edge/corner quality...

. Since then I acquired a Pentax FA 24-90/3.5-4.5 which I consider a better lens although with less reach. Not to mention I still have my FA 28-70/4 which, while exhibiting the usual looseness in early AF lens, has excellent optics (and no lens separation issues)

I have FA 28-70/4 AL also. It's nice little fullframe zoom. But frankly, my copy of Tamron SP 24-135mm can produce equivalent or better photos to digital FF sensor. Like also my Pentax F 35-70/3.5-4.5 zoom.

plus my Sigma 24-60/2.8 EX DG which was a hidden gem even in the crop factor only days (and has digital coatings).

Sigma 24-60/2.8 would be a good lens to own...Although its 60mm focal length is quite short for me. Same with Sigma 24-70/2.8 too.

I agree the Tamron 24-135 focused a little slower than some other lenses but its not an action lens so it works fine most of the time. +1.
