When it comes to skincare I like to keep things simple. I’m definitely not diligent enough to do a 10-step skincare every day and night, so I’m always on the lookout for multi-tasking wonders. The latest product on my lazy girl radar is Avene’s new Hydrance Aqua-Gel. This 3-in-1 gel works as a moisturiser, mask, and eye cream and is a real saviour for sensitive and dehydrated skin.

An all-in-one hydrating skincare solution, inspired by Japanese beauty rituals, Eau Thermale Avene Hydrance Aqua-Gel can be used as a day cream, a sleeping mask, and is also gentle enough to be used around the eye contour as an eye cream. Forget overly complicated skincare routines – all you need is this one product to give you intense hydration, protect your skin from pollutants and oxidants, keep sebum under control, as well as even out your skin tone.

I love this do-it-all cream because it has a unique texture that you won’t be able to find with other products: it hydrates like a cream, but has a refreshing gel-like texture that ensures the product immediately melts into the skin. You only need to use a small pea-size amount of the product to cover your entire face, which means one 50ml tub of this little gem will last quite a while before you need to stock up again. If you have combination skin you can also use the product as a spot treatment and apply a small amount to drier areas of your face.

I used this product for a little over a month and it’s truly lovely. The product feels oh-so-fresh when applying and gives you a great glowing, dewy look while leaving your skin feeling silky soft. I struggle with dry skin and this lightweight product gives me an instant boost of hydration without that overly heavy, sticky skin feel you often get from gel products.

Eau Thermale Avene Hydrance Aqua-Gel is anti-fatigue and offers an antioxidant action, making it a saviour for skin that has been battered by the harsh winter weather. The powerful combination of ??????? ??????? and ???-?????????? in the Hydrance Aqua-Gel works to decongest the skin, while protecting it from the harmful effects of free radicals. The product also contains a high concentration of Avene’s signature Thermal Spring Water, to boost hydration. Sodium Hyaluronate (a form of Hyaluronic Acid), works together with the spring water to attract water to the skin, while Vitamin E offers protection against free radicals.

I definitely noticed a big improvement in the hydration levels of my skin after a few weeks of using this product. I’ve had quite a few psoriasis breakouts along my hairline and around my eyes during this winter season and have struggled with dry patches on my nose as well. This product helped to soothe those areas and bring some much-needed hydration to my thirsty skin. There aren’t a lot of moisturising products I can use around the sensitive skin around my eyes when I have a psoriasis breakout so this has proven to been a real saviour.

I also love to use this beauty as a mask. When my skin is feeling a little worse for wear, I use the Hydrance Aqua-Gel as a sleep mask before bed and in the morning my skin looks radiant and refreshed. I can’t recommend it enough and I’m quite sure that anyone with dehydrated or sensitive skin like mine will adore it as much as I do. Use it along with Eau Thermale Avene Thermal Spring Water spray as a toner and you’ve got a match made in heaven!

Crystal Espin

After years of working as an Editor and writer for popular websites like Joburg’s Darling, Cape Town’s Darling and Joburg.co.za, Crystal left her sanity and an established career in lifestyle journalism behind to follow her dream of creating a website for the intellectual and discerning woman. Today she spends her time chasing the thrill of being the first to know about ‘the next big thing’. She’ll try anything once and has been known to put her body, hair and health on the line – all in the name of research.

I've always loved Avène for their soothing skincare that manages to make my skin look so much better - even after one use. The Soothing Moisture Mask, specifically, has been mentioned on my site many times. When I saw their Hydrance Aqua Cream-In-Gel released earlier this summer, I knew I had to try it out. As I grow older, I realize that my sensitive, combo skin sometimes just needs a drink of water and a blanket of redness-reducing moisturizer before bed. No acids, no charcoal, no fuss. Here's how the two products compare, as I use them both as a before-bed restorative mask.

AVÈNE HYDRANCE AQUA CREAM-IN-GEL 50ml

"An all-in-one care inspired by Asian galenics, formulated in Japan and made in France. Its very fresh aqua-gel texture leaves a delicate water-veil sensation."

I have to admit that it wasn't love at first swipe with this gelly cream product. I found it to be a bit sticky, and it didn't soak in as seamlessly as my Moisture Mask. After continued use, it is growing on me. I like that it comes with a spatula, though jar packaging is proven to be very unhygienic. This is a good option for oily or combination-skin people since it isn't too heavy. I like that is is marketed to be multi-functional, layering under makeup just as well as it layers as a final nighttime step. Not my ride-or-die, but a fun new release that's worth a shot.

AVÈNE THERMAL SPRING WATER SPRAY "Avène Thermal Spring Water is captured directly at its source and bottled in a sterile environment, ensuring that all its soothing and softening properties are preserved."

I must include the classic Avène Thermal Water in this post since it truly enhances any moisturizing product you apply. It is recommended to spray an even layer of thermal water on the skin directly BEFORE and AFTER the application of Soothing Moisture Mask. Yes, it totally amps up the plump on your skin. The water acts as a vehicle to draw the moisturizer deeper into the skin, and really working to its full potential.

AVÈNE SOOTHING MOISTURE MASK 50ml

"A true moisture bath, leaves your skin refreshed and glowing. Paraben-free."

As mentioned, this Moisture Mask remains as one of my favourite skincare products ever. It smells almost like classic Nivea cream, and has the most milky, refreshing and calming texture. A gentle cream that soaks right in to heal and protect the skin, you will adore this. Guaranteed. I also like all of the basic day creams from the brand, which can be found in formulas for both combination and dry skins.
