The Pentax K mount was introduced in 1975 and has been Pentax’s primary mount for both film and digital SLRs ever since. It has changed a few times to add new features like automatic aperture control and autofocus, but the bayonets underneath are the same. This means all Pentax K lenses will mount on all K mount bodies, including the newest digital cameras.

Pentax K was also widely used by other manufacturers like Ricoh, Cosina, and Chinon, so there is a wide variety of lenses available for the system. M42 lenses can also be adapted quite easily to work on Pentax K bodies.

One of Pentax's most successful cameras, the Pentax K1000, was instrumental in the success of the system. The K1000 is one of the longest-lived 35mm cameras and was produced from 1976 to 1997. It remains one of the go-to recommendations for photography students.

Note: Pentax K mount lenses made by Ricoh have a special “Ricoh pin”. If you want to use these lenses on autofocus Pentax cameras, the pin must be removed. Otherwise it will become locked to the autofocus shaft and removing the lens may require disassembly.

They aren't quite the same. The top one is the SMC Pentax-F, which is super-multi-coated. The bottom one is a standard coated Pentax-F, which would have been offered at a lower price. It may also have a simpler construction, but I don't have any information on that.

The SMC version will give better contrast, better colour saturation and lower levels of flare and is the more desireable of the two lenses. It is the most expensive of the 28-80mm options from that particular vintage of Pentax autofocus lenses!

(From Pentax lens literature) The Pentax SMC P-FA J 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 AL is designed to be used with fully automatic cameras and is an ideal zoom lens for advanced beginners. Its lightweight design makes it easy to handle and maneuver. It features aspherical lens elements to help transmit light more efficiently and our acclaimed SMC multi-layer coating to lower surface reflection, reduce ultraviolet rays, and deliver clear, high-contrast images.

Mid-August is a boring time: the lily season is over, dahlias aren't blooming yet, and the golden autumn is two months away. Not much to shoot. That's why I decided to try an old lens that's been lying around for a while: the Pentax-F 28-80mm F3.5-4.5. I got this lens for free as a result of an Ebay deal gone wrong. Since I have this focal range covered by other lenses on digital and am going to switch my film shooting from Pentax to Canon, I saw no reason to use this lens. I tried to sell it, but it seemed like nobody was interested...

The lens is small and plasticy but surprisingly heavy – there is a lot of glass packed in it. There is some glow wide open, but at F8 the sharpness is very good, on par with the Tamron 28-75mm F2.8. Chromatic aberrations and purple fringing are manageable. There is a small drawback though – at 80mm and infinity, the AF is inconsistent. However, manual focus can help – the lens has a hard stop at infinity. Here are some sample photos taken this morning:

Of course, I checked if it could be used as a botanical lens. I tried the macro mode and found it inconvenient: first you have to focus manually using the zoom ring (sic!) then press the shutter button and the AF will do the rest. There is a glow wide open, and the bokeh is mediocre. Not quite a botanical lens!

My conclusion: good lens for film shooters and new K1 owners who ran out of money

Sharp, bright colors more than FA 24-70 f4 AL. However ….. I think "The Penta FA lens would be receive appropriate from photographers who want to get a result like a film camera."

Thanks, Sukit! Both lenses have the same SMC coating, so any difference in colour is due to different processing. Enjoy your new K1!

Comparing with Sukit's shots on another recent thread, I'd say the difference is in contrast and saturation, very easily fixed in something as user-friendly as FastStone. Both lenses seem to offer pretty decent resolution, which is the most important thing.

There is a great sample variation between these consumer lenses. The 28-70/4 I had was optically worse than this 28-80 especially at the wide end.
