"Make something" nghĩa là tạo ra cái gì đó, còn dùng “do something” trong trường hợp đã hoàn thành việc gì đó.
Một ví dụ khác, khi nói “make dinner”, nghĩa là bạn thực hiện bữa ăn tối bằng cách cho tất cả nguyên liệu vào nồi và chế biến chúng. Ở đây không ngụ ý đến kết quả, mà tập trung nhiều vào quá trình tạo ra nó.
Tuy nhiên, khi dùng “do” như “do homework”, tức bạn hoàn thành bài tập về nhà của mình. Chúng ta không nói “make your homework”, mà là “do your homework”, “complete your homework, please” hoặc “do your chores”, “do your laundry”.
Một lưu ý nữa trong tiếng Anh là cụm từ cố định. Cụm từ cố định mang ý nghĩa cố định và chúng không thể thay đổi. Với từ “do” sẽ có những cụm từ mặc định phải đi liền nhau như “do your homework”, “do your chores”, “do me a favor”.
Với từ “make”, cụm từ cố định “make a mess” nghĩa là tạo ra một đống lộn xộn. “Make a difference” với một ai đó nghĩa là tạo ra một sự thay đổi trong cuộc sống.
