You hear the term 'cult' thrown around a lot to describe beauty products, but what does that actually mean?

For a product to truly reach cult status, it needs to tick a bunch of different boxes:

Are there tonnes of glowing reviews online? Would you recommend it to your friends and family? But probably the most telling sign of a cult product is when it becomes a mainstay in your routine.

When you repurchase it again and again (and again) because it’s just so damn good.

La Roche Posay's Cicaplast Baume B5+ Balm is one such cult buy.

La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5+ 40ml is a beauty staple with dermal therapists, beauty enthusiasts, skinfluencers and beauty editors because it’s one of the best products for dry, sensitive and irritated skin. It also helps it comes highly recommended by dermatologists.

Sounds great, but is this humble blue and white tube of moisturiser all over your Instagram feed really more than just a moisturiser?

Short answer, yes.

After joining the Cicaplast Baume B5+ club a few years ago, I've never looked back.

I've gotten my whole family on it too, including my aunty who is mostly a bougie-beauty buyer but decided this is her new favourite moisturiser. (She lives in Melbourne and her face is always in need of extra moisture).

Keep scrolling to find out why this multipurpose product is a genuinely magical skin salve.

What is La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5+?

What exactly is the La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5+ and why is it so good?

La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5+ 40ml is a rich, fragrance-free, multipurpose balm that helps to soothe and repair dry, cracked or irritated skin, rough patches and redness.

It’s not what you would think a typical ‘balm’ is, though. The texture is like a creamy moisturiser that isn’t too heavy and doesn’t look or feel greasy.

You can also use it as a skin barrier recovery cream after any professional skin treatments.

Dermatologically-tested for sensitive skin, it can even be used on babies or to treat sunburn.

The main ingredients that give Cicaplast Baume B5+ its restorative powers include:

  • Panthenol (Vitamin B5) for soothing and hydrating skin.
  • Madecassoside, a plant extract that regulates cell renewal and helps to repair dry skin.
  • Glycerin, an all-rounder humectant hydrating ingredient (particularly in winter skincare) that defends against dryness by replenishing and hydrating skin.
  • Shea butter, an emollient ingredient that keeps moisture in the skin and helps to relieve dryness.
  • And now, after a very exciting renovation, it also includes tribioma - a unique prebiotic complex that aids in soothing sensitive skin concerns and accelerating skin repair. It works by increasing skins hydration and natural defenses while also protecting against external aggressors.

My La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5+ Review.

One word: OBSESSED.

It’s no coincidence my usual combination to oily skin's been feeling drier in winter, so using a thicker moisturiser has been key.

I’ve been using the Cicaplast balm mostly as a nourishing night cream in my evening routine after I’ve popped on all my serums.

If you're super oily or have blemish-prone skin, you might prefer a lightweight gel moisturiser formula for the face (you can still use Cicaplast on the hands and body though!).

But even though it’s a richer cream, the texture sinks really nicely into the skin. No white marks or stickiness afterwards.

And to all La Roche-Posay Cicaplast fans, our dreams have come true, you can now get a Cicaplast supersize! Yep, the French pharmacy brand heard our demands and they've delivered with the La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5+ 100ml so you don't run out so quickly. Genius!

Watch a few of the ways I use this multi-use balm in my quick tutorial video below.

How to Use La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5+.

Aside from slathering this skin-saving moisturiser on as the last step in my evening skincare routine, here are some other ways I’ve been using Cicaplast Baume B5+:

1. As a lip balm.

With all its soothing and repairing qualities, this creamy balm serves as the perfect antidote to dry and cracked lips.

I pop some on at night before bed as a lip mask because that’s when my lips get really dry. I also dab some on before my daily walk when the dry winds are giving my lips a bit of a beating.

And as soon as we’re outta lockdown, you best believe I’m popping some on under my lippy for smoother application!

2. As a primer under makeup.

When L’Oreal Scientific Communications Manager Rachel McAdam mentioned you could use this product as a primer, I wasn't sure.

Then I tried it, and the glow was real.

Oily skin types, this might not be for you - although our resident oily skin-haver Hannah loves a dewy moisturiser in her oily skin foundation routine.

I found the best way to use the product as a primer is to apply to dry or patchy areas, let it settle for a few minutes, then apply your makeup. Voila!

3. On dry knees and elbows, or as a body cream.

Those with really dry elbows and knees (like moi), take note.

This balm has the hydrating power to soften and provide moisture to rougher areas of skin.

"Skin [around elbows and knees] is super thirsty due to the added layers of hardened skin. The added vitamin B5 can help soothe the skin if it is subject to day to day stresses – like pressure and friction," Rachel adds.
