The presenter thanks his listeners and says he will miss his "partner in crime", Vick Hope.

Liverpool fans might have looked upon a trip to Brentford with a degree of trepidation given recent visits to the Gtech community stadium.

The Reds had drawn and lost on their last two visits and had not won there in the league since March 1938.

However, Jurgen Klopp's men brushed aside any concerns to produce a confident display as they ran out 4-1 winners.

Although there's no doubting the fact that this victory over the Bees came at a cost.

Klopp did not give a detailed prognois afterwards but it seems Diogo Jota and Curtis Jones could both be set for a spell on the sidelines.

Darwin Nunez looks to have been substituted at half-time as a precaution.

One of the positives of Liverpool's season has been the emergence of a number of youngsters.

They are likely to be called upon again to plug the gaps in the next few weeks.

  • Jurgen Klopp, speaking to BBC MOTD after Liverpool's victory over Brentford: "Of course the injury situation is really horrible, it doesn't look great. "A knock for Curtis [Jones] I have not spoke to him and Diogo [Jota] doesn't look good at all, Darwin [Nunez] fell a little bit so we thought we would take no risks and brought Cody [Gakpo] on. "We don't know how bad the situation is, but the boys played an incredible game. "You could see we needed a few minutes to get used to it and it is crazy we had 65% or more of the ball. "If you think of the opponent having less of the ball and it makes it really difficult to dominate them, but in the moment we did really well. "Caoimhin Kelleher had an incredible game and we scored goals and that is what makes the difference." On the goals: "Top goal and top game again [from Darwin Nunez] - a real handful all the time. "We take it how it is [regarding injuries] and we will see when we get the information, but a as long as we have 11 players on the pitch and we fight that is all that matters."

Mohamed Salah scored his first goal for Liverpool since New Year's Day as they beat Brentford to open up a five-point lead at the top of the Premier League. Darwin Nunez put Liverpool ahead with a superb chip before Alexis Mac Allister poked in a second at the Gtech Community Stadium. Salah, back from an injury sustained on Egypt duty at the Africa Cup of Nations, got on the scoresheet with a crisp finish. Ivan Toney pulled a goal back for Brentford but Cody Gakpo added the gloss for Liverpool. Manchester City and Arsenal will move back to within two points of Liverpool later on Saturday if they beat Chelsea and Burnley respectively. The only sour point for Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was more additions to a lengthening injury list. Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota limped off before half-time, while Nunez was substituted at the interval. Were you at the match or did you follow it from home? BBC pundit Chris Sutton is making predictions for all 380 Premier League matches again this season, against a variety of guests. For this weekend's games, he takes on rapper Songer, who is a Chelsea fan. Sutton's prediction: 1-2 Brentford have scored three goals in each of their past two home games against Liverpool, and I can see them giving the Reds more problems this time too. Arsenal and Manchester City have both had to fight hard to get away wins against the Bees this season, and Jurgen Klopp's side need to do the same to stay on top of the Premier League. It will not be easy for them, though. I was at Anfield for BBC Radio 5 Live last week to see Liverpool beat Burnley, but they weren't very convincing in that game and I would give Brentford a real chance of taking at least a point here. Liverpool have been stretched by injuries recently and Trent Alexander-Arnold's latest knee problem is another blow, but Joe Gomez can cover at right-back, plus Conor Bradley is back in training. Mohamed Salah is getting back to full fitness too and might even feature on Saturday. Salah's return would be a huge boost and will increase Liverpool's firepower, but their attack is very strong even without him and I think that is what will get them over the line here. I'm going with my heart over my head, really, because I would like to see a close title race and Liverpool need to keep winning to keep City at bay. Songer's prediction: 1-3 Brentford are not the most consistent team this season. I still think they will stay up comfortably in the end but Liverpool are going to win this. Image source, Getty Images It was a rainy day at Liverpool training ground but Jurgen Klopp arrived for his news conference earlier on with a big smile. And, no wonder he was in a happy mood. The German has Mohamed Salah back available for the game at Brentford at 12:30 GMT on Saturday. Salah returned to full training this week after sustaining a hamstring injury playing for Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations on 18 January. Klopp will also be able to call on keeper Alisson Becker as well as defenders Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez and Conor Bradley for a game he called “super tricky”. Konate is back from a one-game suspension, Alisson and Gomez have recovered from illness and Bradley is back at Liverpool following the death of his father. However, defender Trent Alexander-Arnold and midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai remain out, with Klopp saying neither had been rushed back after respective knee and hamstring injuries. Klopp had plenty of praise for Brentford and added that his team will have to be at their best to get the win to keep their noses in front in the Premier League title race. Earlier this week The Football News Show looked at one of Jurgen Klopp's possible successors. You can watch on iPlayer here or take in the show below. Media caption, As Xabi Alonso closes in on the title with Bayer Leverkusen, what will his next move be?
  • Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has been speaking to the media before Saturday's Premier League match away to Brentford. Here are the key lines from his news conference:
  • Klopp confirmed Mohamed Salah is in full training and will be "back in contention" for Saturday after recovering from injury. Conor Bradley, Joe Gomez, Alisson and Ibrahima Konate are also all available.
  • However, Dominik Szoboszlai, Thiago Alcantara and Trent Alexander-Arnold remain unavailable, with Szoboszlai a doubt for the Carabao Cup final next weekend and Alexander-Arnold ruled out.
  • Klopp was strong on rumours of rushing Alexander-Arnold back after injury: "A thing we have to clarify a bit - I was not really aware of it, but I got the news that there was a discussion we might have 'forced' Trent back because of two setbacks. Nobody wants that and nobody is doing that. Different cases, different scenarios and as long as I am here we will not force anybody back and never do."
  • He had big praise for Harvey Elliot: "We always forget how young he is. Before his bad injury, he was one of the first on the teamsheet. Young players go through different moments in the early stage of their career [and] it's completely normal. Harvey is incredibly important and I'm sure he knows that. Probably he wants to start every game but he has time, he is young and he will be there 100%."
  • Klopp is wary of the threat posed by Brentford: "Super tricky through the way they play and their set-up. Ivan Toney makes a difference. All the guys back from the Africa Cup of Nations make a difference. Neal Maupay finding his feet makes a difference. We have to be at our best if we want to win at Brentford - [they are] a really smartly coached team."
  • On being defensively sound from dead balls: "How can you defend for 95 minutes against Brentford? Avoid any kind of set-pieces. That's impossible. Not just set-pieces - they're good at defending and dangerous at counter-attacking. The atmosphere is really good."
  • More on Thomas Frank's side: "Their second ball game is second to none. It's very smart what they do - it's exactly what I'd do. It has kept them for years already and for the next years definitely in the Premier League. The developments the club have made in the last few years is really impressive."
  • When asked if he could have seen the Reds challenging for the title this time last year when they lost to Brentford and were sixth in the Premier League: "If I had thought about that I would never have guessed that, but I didn't." Follow the rest of Friday's Premier League news conferences

  • The key facts and figures before Saturday's game between Brentford and Liverpool in the Premier League.
  • The home side has never lost a Premier League meeting between Brentford and Liverpool (W4 D1), with the Bees winning this exact fixture 3-1 last season.
  • Brentford have lost four of their past six home Premier League matches, as many as they had in their previous 30 such home games combined (W15 D11 L4).
  • Liverpool have won just two of their past eight away Premier League games in London (D3 L3) – indeed, both of their league defeats this season have come in the capital (vs Spurs in September and Arsenal in February).
  • Since Ivan Toney’s first Premier League appearance this season on January 20th, only three players have more goals in the division than he does (3 in 4 games) Liverpool are, however, one of the four teams he has faced without scoring against in the competition (3 games, 7 shots, 1 shot on target).
  • Brentford’s Neal Maupay has been directly involved in exactly one goal in each of his six home Premier League starts for Brentford (4 goals, 2 assists). In Premier League history, only two players have scored or assisted in their first seven home starts for a club: Alan Shearer for Newcastle (first 15, 1996-97) and Álvaro Negredo for Man City (first 7, 2013).
  • Liverpool’s Diogo Jota has scored nine Premier League goals this season, and is looking to hit double figures in a single campaign for just a second time in the competition (15 in 2021-22). The Portuguese forward has scored five goals in his past six league matches, and scored in his only previous appearance at the Brentford Community Stadium in the top-flight (September 2021).

Manchester City are favourites for the Premier League title, we know that because of the game in hand, but they also still have to go to Liverpool and play at home to Arsenal. It is brilliant to see the title race like this though, and I think we know from City's record that Liverpool are going to have to really push all the way if they want to win the league. But, can they win it? Can Arsenal win it? Yes. Question marks were asked last week at West Ham for the Gunners on whether they could continue in that process and they really put that to bed very, very quickly with a wonderful display. It's a fantastic title race and it really is anybody's to win. City are on a good run and with Liverpool losing to Arsenal, how will that affect them? It was a bit of an unconvincing performance last week against Burnley, but they got through, they got the points. It is really tight, anyone of those can win it and that's what we want to see right until the end. Can Liverpool and Arsenal sustain this level of performance and wins? They're going to need to if they're going to beat this Manchester City side to the trophy and that will be the key factor in the last few weeks of the season. The news that Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to miss the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea comes as another savage injury blow for Liverpool. He was substituted at half-time in the 3-1 win against Burnley after aggravating an existing knee problem. There has not yet been a timeframe set for his return to the squad, but he is expected to be out for a number of weeks. Being ruled out for the big match at Wembley might be the initial headline maker, but it also means he is a definite non-starter for the upcoming games against Brentford and Luton. Both matches are hugely important in terms of the race for the Premier League title. While the world is waiting for 10 March when Manchester City go to Anfield, even that monumental meeting of the Premier League's big hitters would have a somewhat reduced value if they drop points in matches they are expected to win. At the other end of the injury scale, Mohamed Salah has made a welcome return to training this week. Having one of the world's best players available again gives a huge boost to the Reds' title hopes, but it is worth remembering how well Liverpool have done in terms of goalscoring during his absence. Diogo Jota has been in inspired form in the past month or so. If he was just providing goals and an all-round energy and intensity that is a nightmare for opposing defenders, that would be more than enough. But Jota also has a priceless game intelligence that allows him to find space in even the tightest situations and he is also prepared to drop deeper when necessary to link the play. Darwin Nunez's recent form has been discussed and dissected a lot in recent weeks and as much as a more productive goalscoring return would be more than welcome, what he brings to the team in terms of endeavour, energy and electrifying pace makes him a key member of the squad. He also has the trust of his manager and the adoration of the fans. Two goals in front of the Kop for Luis Diaz will have helped to boost his confidence no end. He is just beginning to find his form at a much more consistent level and his "never say die" approach and his relentless running has the capacity to put even the most organised defences under pressure. The trip to Brentford has an awkward look to it. Liverpool have yet to win there since Thomas Frank's team were promoted and Ivan Toney has managed to hit the ground running after his enforced absence. Between now and the end of the season, every single match will have its potential pitfalls.

Image source, Getty Images Daily Mail journalist Dominic King says Xabi Alonso is "not thinking about Liverpool" despite being constantly linked with replacing Jurgen Klopp as manager at the end of the season. Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen are five points clear at the top of the Bundesliga, and still unbeaten, after an impressive 3-0 win over Bayern Munich on Saturday. Alonso won the Champions League as a player at Liverpool and is the favourite to succeed Klopp when his nine-year spell in charge at Anfield comes to an end in the summer. "The thing about Xabi is, I think he's been plotting to be a manager for most of his life," King told BBC Radio Merseyside's Total Sport programme. "Everything about that performance (against Bayern) was down to the players following a clear plan. "I spoke to Jonathan Tah, the main central defender, and he was talking about the repetition that Xabi enforces in training so everybody knows what they have to do. "You can see it a mile off, they look so much better coached than Bayern Munich were. That's saying that about a manager like Thomas Tuchel and the CV he's got. "He's not thinking about Liverpool. Of course it's a romantic storyline for everybody and he is probably the overwhelming candidate, but believe me when I say his only focus at the minute is what he's achieving with Bayer Leverkusen. "He's going to potentially make some kind of history this year. Knowing the type of character he is, that's all he's bothered about." Listen to more on BBC Sounds

A highly-rated young manager, taking the Bundesliga by storm and threatening to punctuate an era of Bayern Munich domination - sound familiar? When Jurgen Klopp left Borussia Dortmund in 2015 after seven years, he had taken a team that finished 13th the season before he arrived and won two league titles, a German Cup and reached a Champions League final. He recorded league finishes of sixth, fifth, first, first, second, second and finally seventh - growing a team every year into title challengers, and winners, before tailing off in his final season. Now, with Klopp set to depart Anfield at the end of the season, the man heavily-touted to replace him is currently on course to winning the Bundesliga title in his first full season in charge of Bayer Leverkusen. The rise for Xabi Alonso, however, has been ever more dramatic. Leverkusen were second from bottom after eight games when the former Liverpool midfielder was appointed in October 2022 for his first managerial role in senior football. They eventually finished sixth and reached the semi-final of the Europa League. This season the steep upward trajectory has continued. Leverkusen are top of the Bundesliga after 21 games, unbeaten having just dismantled Bayern 3-0. Of course, it's a far smaller sample size and he's a much less experienced manager, but Alonso's win percentage and goals-per-game do exceed Dortmund's Bundesliga record under Klopp. Even Leverkusen's goals conceded per game (one) is slightly lower than Dortmund's 1.04 under the German boss. It is early days in Alonso's managerial career but history, his connection to the club, and record compared to Klopp, point to another exciting potential appointment.
  • Media caption, How would Xabi Alonso fit as Liverpool manager if he was to succeed Jurgen Klopp? That is the question on the table for The Football News Show as reports continue to suggest the Bayer Leverkusen boss could top the Reds' list in the search for their next manager. Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock believes Alonso would be a fine candidate for the role. "You've got to bring someone in who has won things or knows how to win, or someone who straight away with the training sessions makes you turn around and say 'this is something special'," Warnock said. "It's going to be interesting to see the difference in dynamic, if he is to get the job, between what we are used to seeing on the touchline in Jurgen Klopp - who is very emotional - and maybe a calmer figure on the touchline in Xabi Alonso." Image source, PA Media I suppose it doesn't matter to the real die-hard fan how you play, as long as you win. Liverpool are usually fun to watch because of their attacking attitude. At Anfield recently, I was watching their second-half system closely and to be honest, the 4-3-3 formation on the team sheet looked much more like a 2-3-5 when they attacked The Kop. This is a variation of a very ancient system, but it shows the versatility of Jurgen Klopp's club. Whereas you know precisely what Manchester City will try to do, Liverpool use their intelligence in varying ways. Well they certainly used their heads at the weekend, all four goals in the 3-1 win over Burnley were headers. This adaptability is one of the key reasons why the eventual title winners are so hard to choose between City, Arsenal, Liverpool and, at a stretch, Spurs. I am still leaning towards City... but it is a very gentle lean. Pat Nevin was writing for the BBC Football Extra newsletter

Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has been discussing the future of Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso.

He told The Football News Show that Liverpool is an option for the former Reds midfielder, but it is not the only one.
