Playlists in an app like Music can help you group together your favorites songs, those based on mood, or tunes for a special occasion. And in the Music app on Mac, you can use folders to organize those playlists better.

For instance, maybe you like to create playlists for holidays like Christmas and New Year’s, so you can listen during the festivities. With a folder in the music app, you can take all of those holiday playlists and pop them into a folder just for Holidays.

This is just one example, and there are probably plenty of others where organizing your playlists into folders would come in handy. So, our tutorial is going to show you how to create and manage playlist folders in the Music app on your Mac.

Create a playlist folder in the Music app

If you don’t see the Music app, make sure that you have updated your computer to macOS Catalina or later. That’s when the Music app for Mac was introduced.

Now to create your folder, just follow these simple steps.

1) Open the Music app and click File > New > Playlist Folder from the menu bar.

2) A new folder will be created as an “untitled folder” ready for your input. You’ll see a screen for it pop open and it listed under Playlists in the sidebar.

3) Click “untitled folder” on the folder screen to enter your own folder name and optionally add a description.

And there you go! Your new playlist folder has been created and you can now add your playlists to it.

Add playlists to your folder

With your playlist folder empty, it’s time to move some playlists into it and it couldn’t be easier.

In the sidebar under Playlists, just click, drag, and drop a playlist into your playlist folder.

Just make sure before you release that the playlist is hovering over the folder. You’ll notice the folder become highlighted and that’s when you can drop your playlist in it.

Using and managing your playlist folder

There are two great advantages to using playlist folders in the Music app.

First, you can group your playlists together for better organization. This makes finding the playlist you want, especially if you have many, much easier.

Second, you can play the folder contents all at one time if you like. Using our Holidays folder example, you might want to play your Christmas and New Year’s songs all together and at once. Having them in a folder allows you to do that.

If you need to make changes to your playlist folder, you can right-click or hold Control and click it in the sidebar. Alternatively, you can click the More (three-dot icon) button on the playlist folder screen. From there you can download, play, shuffle, love, dislike, or delete the folder.

Wrapping it up

As you can see, creating a playlist folder in the Music app on Mac is simple and takes only a few minutes. And the benefits of using a playlist folder make it worth your time.

Are you going to organize your playlists with folders? Let us know how it works out for you! And if you have your own tips or tricks for the Music app on Mac that you’d like to share, feel free to comment or ping us on Twitter.

In iTunes we can create a Playlist Folder (playlist folder) and include regular playlists to it:

Then we can play the entire folder (from the screenshot two playlists are played as one), but in Apple Music app for iOS we can only open that Playlist Folder and then play only a separate regular playlist, we can't play all playlists inside this Playlist Folder, it seems only possible with iTunes.

I tend to be a very organized person and one of my favourite features about Spotify is how I can organize playlists. I have multiple folders that I can organize my subscribed playlists into. As far as I know AM doesn’t have this feature and it’s one of the reasons I’m still with Spotify.

Does anyone have any suggestions or tricks of how to better organize AM subscribed playlists?

To help you organize your songs, movies, and other items, you can create folders, then add playlists and other folders to them. (You can’t add individual items directly to a folder.)

Note: If you want to change the order of the items in the folder, select the folder, then choose View > Sort By.

If you delete a folder, all the playlists and folders inside that folder are deleted; however, the songs in the playlist or folder remain in your library and on your computer.

Question: Q:

How do I delete playlist folders from iOS Music? My music app has gotten corrupted and has duplicated all the playlist folders that I created myself, literally hundreds of folders and playlists. Long press on the folder does nothing. Slide the folder icon does nothing. Nothing in the three dots "..." drop down. There has got to be a way to do this in iOS.

Hi Currie,

It sounds like you have duplicate playlists. We're glad you've joined us in Apple Support Communities. Let's see if this helps.

Follow the steps in the section, How to force an app to close on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch for the Mail App.

If the issue remains after following those steps, let us know if you Restart your iPhone, does the issue remain? A restart is a great step when experiencing behaviors like this.

Also, it sounds like you are doing it correctly, but just to be sure check out the section "Delete a playlist" in Create playlists on iPhone.

If the issue remains after following those steps, let us know what iOS version you're running and what steps you've tried from the above resources.

We hope that helps with your question and take care!

My main problem is how to delete duplicate playlist folders in iOS Music app. I have multiple copies of playlist folders in Music, the original of which I have created over the years. These duplicate folders are mostly empty with no playlists inside. There seems to be no obvious way to delete the folders. I am running the latest version of the iOS operating system 14.4.2.
