What’s This TV Show About?

Airing on the NBC television network, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist stars Jane Levy, Skylar Astin, Alex Newell, John Clarence Stewart, Andrew Leeds, Alice Lee, Michael Thomas Grant, Kapil Talwalkar, and Mary Steenburgen. Zoey Clarke [Levy] is a whip-smart computer coder who’s making her way in San Francisco. After an unusual event, Zoey, who always preferred podcasts over pop songs, suddenly starts to hear the innermost wants, thoughts, and desires of the people around her – her family, co-workers, and complete strangers – through popular songs. The second season picks up after a tragedy and Zoey and her family begin to recalibrate and navigate their new normal. As she finds herself in a new dynamic at work and in her love life, Zoey’s musical powers continue to both awkwardly complicate and inform her worldview as she attempts to rediscover joy and connect with those around her.

  Telly’s Take

Will NBC cancel or renew Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist for season three? The series isn’t a low performer in the regular ratings but does well in streaming and delayed viewing. It also has a passionate fanbase. A co-production of Lionsgate and NBCUniversal, I think that it will be renewed but might move to Peacock for year three. What do you think? Were you hoping that the Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist TV show would be renewed for a third season? Are you sorry that NBC cancelled this TV series, instead? Will you watch the holiday movie?

Following the big holiday movie premiering today, is there a chance at a Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist season 3 renewal at the Roku Channel?

Let’s start things off with this: Roku is currently swimming in all sorts of uncertainty at the moment. This is a brand-new property for them and they aren’t going to commit to anything more at the moment. The show even getting a Christmas Movie is a last-second Hail Mary, and certainly not something that a lot of people would have expected to see happen in advance. It came about because of a rigorous fan campaign and a real belief that there is more story to be told here.

As we look towards the future here, we know that there’s an openness to more happening down the road — it all depends on performance! The Christmas Special, plus the other episodes that are all there streaming for free, have to perform well enough for the Roku Channel to justify bringing it back for more. It’s not something that is guaranteed since a show like this, with all of its musical numbers and cast, doesn’t come cheap.

So what can you do to help make a Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist season 3 happen? It’s ultimately quite simple: Be sure to watch the special! Tell your friends and family to do the same. If there’s a lot of viewership and clear demand for more, there’s a chance there could be more. Just don’t expect it to happen right away. Because a lot of people out there may not be familiar with the Roku Channel yet, there may be a discovery period out there for the show — it could take months for a decision to be made on the future and even if it is renewed, we could be waiting until late 2022 if not longer for more.

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist fans, we’re crossing our fingers that there will be more heart songs someday.

The latest season of the NBC musical dramedy followed Zoey [Jane Levy] as she grieved the loss of her dad. While trying to move on, she tried her best to help those around her, but she just couldn't sort out her emotions for Max [Skylar Astin] and Simon [John Clarence Stewart]. Despite all sorts of drama unfolding — family, work, romance you name it! — it was still fun to sing along to the catchy numbers revealing everyone’s most inner thoughts.

If you're wondering what will happen next, here’s what we know about season 3 of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist:

When is Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist season 3 premiering?

Unfortunately, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist was not renewed for season 3 and the dramedy was canceled by NBC. According to TVLine, this decision was ultimately made by the network’s sibling streaming platform, Peacock, which opted not to move forward with an eight-episode final season.

After the news broke, showrunner Austin Winsberg immediately took to Twitter to ask fans to tweet with the hashtag #savezoeysplaylist and get it trending. He was also joined by executive producer Paul Feig, who compared the cancelation to Freaks & Geeks.

“Right now I refuse to believe the show is dead,” Austin wrote. “There is too much love and goodwill and the fan base is incredible … I believe we can have a real chance somewhere else. But the more fan support we can throw behind it – the better.”

A week later, Jane Levy, who plays Zoey, opened up to Vanity Fair about her thoughts on the matter. Even before receiving a nomination for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy Series, the 31-year-old star was sure she and the rest of the cast would return to Canada to film season 3. But she saw the show’s fate quickly change over a weekend, and it isn’t one she agrees with.

Speaking frankly with the magazine, Jane said: “I’m sorry, but I have to say this: I look at the new NBC lineup, and it’s like, ‘Okay, we could watch a lot of shows about crime and guns.’ Our show is about love. It’s a real shame to take that off the air … I feel like it’s the wrong move.”

Is this really the end of Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist?

Now that we got that bad news out of the way, here's the good news: TV Line reports that the streaming service Roku is close to striking a deal to create a two-hour Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist movie for the holiday season. That said, if the movie does well, Roku reportedly might look into ordering more episodes. Of course, this is not confirmed yet — but if it's true, this is really exciting!

Who would be in the Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist movie?

If — and this is still a big "if" — Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist is picked up by Roku for a holiday movie, we’re predicting that the entire Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist cast will reprise their San Francisco-based characters:

  • Jane Levy as Zoey
  • Alex Newell as Mo
  • John Clarence Stewart as Simon
  • Mary Steenburgen as Maggie
  • Andrew Leeds as David
  • Alice Lee as Emily
  • Michael Thomas Grant as Leif
  • Kapil Talwalkar as Tobin
  • David St. Louis as Perry

How can I watch and stream Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist?

While we wait to hear if Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist will continue on without NBC, you can up on season 2 episodes you might have missed on Hulu. In addition, you can check out seasons 1 and 2 on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play and Vudu.
