Hello lovelies! Today let us review another cushion product. This is the last cushion I will be reviewing on my blog this year because I am planning to go through all of my cushion foundations by the end of the year. So my next foundation purchase might be… next year. 😀

All right. This is my review of the Laneige BB Cushion Pore Control Cushion. I hope you find it helpful. 🙂

CRITERIA:

PACKAGING – Is it cute? Is the packaging too bulky or too flimsy or sturdy enough? Does it get dirty easily? Do I see myself travelling with it? Is it pretty enough to give as a gift to someone?

PERFORMANCE – Is it easy to use/apply? Does it blend easily? Is it beginner-friendly? Do I feel pretty whenever I wear it? Is the color match perfect?

LONGEVITY – Can I wear it for events? How about for extreme outdoor activities? How often do I need to reapply? Is the SPF high enough?

VARIETY – Is the shade selection wide? Do I see it working for different skin tones/colors?

VALUE FOR MONEY – If it is affordable, I have lower expectations but I prefer it over luxury/expensive products for which I have higher expectations. Would I repurchase it?

PACKAGING – Laneige’s cushions come in a simple and cute-looking packaging. I personally love the “holographic” design of the compact, which is the new version of their packaging. The compact is not only aesthetically pleasing, it is also sturdy. It is not bulky so it’s perfect to bring for traveling. Refills are available and can be bought separately.

PERFORMANCE – The BB Pore Control Cushion is easy to use and apply. It is also beginner-friendly. When Laneige changed the packaging of their cushions, they also changed the design of the cushion itself. [the “foam” inside the compact which contains all the product.] The new “SKIN FIT” Cushion is supposed to “make skin look clear and bright as the puff evenly applies the product on the skin.” [laneige.com] The idea is: When you press your cushion puff into the product, the foundation/BB cream will be evenly distributed in the puff, making it easier to apply and blend onto the skin. You will also not get too little or too much product onto the puff. [See picture below.]

With the BB Pore Control cushion, you can start with applying a thin layer then build up the coverage according to your preference or skin needs. It does not provide full coverage right away because it is a BB cushion and not necessarily a full coverage foundation. However, you can build it up to medium-full coverage. It also blends easily on the face. The shade 23 [Sand] also matches me really well. You will not end up with a cakey-looking face even if you apply more than one layer. It sets evenly to a semi-matte finish. It could work for all skin types. If you have dry or normal skin, you can get away with not setting it with powder. In my experience, it did not settle on creases and lines on the face. If you ask me to rate all the cushion foundations I have ever tried, this will come out on top. It’s because this is the most low-maintenance cushion I own; and it always looks good on my skin on any weather and in any occasion. In short, it is the best cushion I have ever tried! It looks pretty on camera; but I haven’t tried taking pictures with flash. [I almost never take pictures with flash anyway.]

1. Top Ingredients

Water is the first ingredient, therefore it has the highest concentration.

Cyclopenta- and Cyclohexasiloxane are silicone derivatives commonly used in cosmetic and skin care products. They are synthetically produced and have low viscosity. They absorb quickly in the skin because they are considered emollients that soothe and soften the skin. Zinc Oxide [Nano] is derived from the naturally-occuring mineral zincite. It is a well-known physical sunscreen ingredient. It protects the skin from UV light. Read more at cosmeticsinfo.org

Titanium Dioxide [Nano] is an “inert earth mineral used as a thickening, whitening, lubricating, and sunscreen ingredient in cosmetics. It protects skin from UVA and UVB radiation and is considered no risk of skin sensitivity. Because it’s gentle, titanium dioxide is a great sunscreen active for sensitive, redness-prone skin. It’s great for use around the eyes, as it is highly unlikely to cause stinging.” [//www.paulaschoice.com/ingredient-dictionary/sunscreen-actives/titanium-dioxide.html] Titanium dioxide nanoparticles were also found to be safe to use on the skin.

Butylene Glycol is one controversial ingredient. Many bloggers accuse this ingredient as being bad for the skin because it is a kind of petroleum, which does not exactly sound like something you would want to put on your face regularly. Contrary to that, butylene glycol actually has many skin care benefits and uses. It increases skin penetration of other ingredients, thins the consistency of products, acts as a solvent and has humectant properties. Niacinamide is one of the best ingredients you can find in this cushion foundation. Also known as Vitamin B3 or nicotinic acid, it is a powerful anti-aging ingredient. My favorite primer and eye cream also contains this ingredient; and I love it! ❤

2. Bottom Ingredients

Aluminum Hydroxide is used as a texture enhancer, coloring agent and absorbent. It has no known skin toxicity. [paulaschoice.com]

Sodium Chloride is commonly used in cosmetics as a thickening agent. It is inexpensive, effective and versatile. [paulaschoice.com] It is also considered safe, non-comedogenic or toxic whether ingested or applied topically.

Fragrance/Parfum can be natural or artificial and it is used in many consumer products to give them a distinct scent. It is used in cosmetics and personal care products because it provides certain benefits to well-being and in some cases, relieves stress. However, according to paulaschoice.com, fragrance-free products are actually the best for everyone because research shows that “fragrances in skin care products are among the most common cause of sensitizing and other negative skin reactions” for all skin types, [//www.paulaschoice.com/expert-advice/skincare-advice/sensitive-skin/why-fragrance-free-products-are-best-for-everyone.html] I personally continue using products with fragrance/s as long as I am sure that I am not allergic or sensitive to them; and that my skin does not react negatively to such fragrances. I also do a “patch test” every time I am trying a new beauty product for the first time. Lastly, whenever I do use a product with fragrance, I make sure that it is at the bottom of the ingredient list. That way, I can be assured that the product does not contain a lot of it.

Dimethicone is used in makeup, skin care and body care products. It is mainly used to improve the texture of the products; but it also has other skin benefits. It protects the skin and prevents moisture loss. It does not penetrate the skin; that’s why it is commonly found in base products like primers and foundations. It also helps prevent breakouts, contrary to all the misleading articles tagging dimethicone as an ingredient which clogs pores. It is in fact, non-comedogenic [doesn’t clog pores] and non-acnegenic. Silica is commonly used in cosmetics because it has particles that absorb sweat and oil. Its particles also prevent light reflection and improve spreadability. There are many types of silica; and the kinds [amorphous and hydrated] which are often used in skin care and makeup products were found to be safe to use.

Extracts are found at the bottom of the ingredient list, so there’s not a huge amount of them found in the product. However, it is still important to know what these extracts are and if they are beneficial for the skin.

• Peppermint extractis mainly used as fragrance in makeup products; but it may also be used as a skin-conditioning agent.
• Pine [Pinus Sylvestris Leaf] extracthas anti-inflammatory properties and antioxidants for a healthy complexion. [ph.althea.kr]
• Chenopodium Quinoa Seed extract conditions and softens the skin [ph.althea.kr]

LONGEVITY – This BB cushion gets a 5 for longevity from me because it lasts all day with minimal reapplication. It looks beautiful on pictures and videos; but it looks better in real-life because it’s natural-looking. It still gives the skin a natural-looking glow despite its semi-matte finish; and it lasts all day! Just a tip: if you are planning to wear this product all day, for special occasions, or if you are commuting to go to school or to work, you need to set it with powder. If you have dry skin like I do, even a thin layer of translucent powder would do; and it does not transfer even when you don’t set it. It has SPF 50+ PA+++ so you’ll not only have a beautiful base for your makeup, you’ll also be protected from UV rays. [BUT! You still have to apply sunscreen underneath!]

VARIETY – Laneige has a range of cushions that caters to different skin needs. They have the Whitening cushion for dry/normal skin, the BB Pore Control cushion for oily/combination skin and the Anti-Aging cushion for mature skin. They also recently launched 3 new variants: The Layering Cover Cushion which is their most full-coverage cushion and the Neo Cushions. [Matte and Glow versions] The BB Pore Control is one of the most popular variants, and I could totally see why. It could work for all skin types. When it comes to shade range, they now have 10! This is a HUGE improvement for Korean brands. Unfortunately, if you have a deep skin tones, you still might not find a shade in this range; but the fact that they expanded their shade range means they can continue doing it until their base products become more inclusive.

VALUE FOR MONEY – This cushion retails for around Php2000 here in the Philippines. [1 set that comes with a compact and 1 refill- separate from the one inside the compact] It is slightly pricey but when you think of it, it’s actually not that expensive since you get a refill. You can buy it cheaper online at Lazada and Shopee. [with many promos, discounts and vouchers] Laneige products are also available in Althea Korea and BeautyMNL. Laneige is one of those mid-range brands [not as affordable as drugstore brands but not as expensive as luxury brands] but their cushions are definitely worth a try. They are also one of the brands that first released cushion foundations; and you can never go wrong with the classics. 😉
