Câu điều kiện loại 1 được sử dụng để dự đoán một hành động, sự việc có thể xảy ra trong tương lai khi có một điều kiện nhất định xảy ra trước.
Câu điều kiện loại 1 hay câu điều kiện nói chung luôn gồm 2 mệnh đề: Mệnh đề chính [mệnh đề kết quả] và Mệnh đề if [mệnh đề điều kiện] và 2 mệnh đề này có thể đổi vị trí cho nhau trong câu.

If + S + V [present simple],
S + will + V
Ví dụ: If my baby sister isn’t hungry, she will not cry. [Nếu em gái tôi không đói, con bé sẽ không khóc.]
Lưu ý:
Trong nhiều trường hợp, will có thể được thay thế bằng một số động từ khuyết thiếu khác [must/ should/ have to/ ought to/ can/ may].
Nếu mệnh đề if đứng trước mệnh đề chính, chúng ta cần dùng dấu phẩy ngăn cách 2 mệnh đề, còn nếu mệnh đề chính đứng trước mệnh đề if thì chúng mình không cần dùng dấu phẩy.
unless = if not. Chúng ta có thể dùng Unless + S + V [present simple] để thay thế cho If + S + am/ is/ are/ do/ does + not + V trong câu điều kiện loại 1.
Ví dụ: You’ll fail in French if you don’t study harder. [Bạn sẽ trượt môn tiếng Pháp nếu bạn không học hành chăm chỉ hơn.]
→ You’ll fail in French unless you study harder.

Dùng để đề nghị hoặc gợi ý
I’ll take you to school if you buy me an ice cream. [Tôi sẽ đưa bạn đến trường nếu bạn mua cho tôi một cây kem.]
Dùng để cảnh báo hoặc đe dọa
If you don’t do your homework, you will be penalized by the teacher. [Nếu bạn không làm bài tập, bạn sẽ bị giáo viên phạt.]
Một số lưu ý khi sử dụng câu điều kiện loại 1
Đôi khi câu điều kiện loại 1 có thể sử dụng thì hiện tại đơn ở cả 2 mệnh đề
Ví dụ: If I want to play chess, please play with me. [Nếu tôi muốn chơi cờ, hãy chơi với tôi.]
Có thể sử dụng thì hiện tại tiếp diễn hoặc thì hiện tại hoàn thành trong mệnh đề if
Ví dụ: If I keep working, I will finish reporting in an hour. [Nếu tôi tiếp tục làm việc, tôi sẽ hoàn thành báo cáo sau một giờ.]
Trong một số ít trường hợp, chúng ta có thể sử dụng thì tương lai tiếp diễn hoặc thì tương lai hoàn thành ở mệnh đề chính trong câu điều kiện loại 1.
Ví dụ: If I go to the cinema early, I will be watching the movie. [Nếu tôi đến rạp chiếu phim sớm, tôi sẽ được xem phim.]

→ Should + S + V-inf, S + will + V
Ví dụ: If my brother has free time, he will read comic books. [Nếu anh trai tôi có thời gian rảnh, anh ấy sẽ đọc truyện tranh.]
