Head-Up Displays [HUD] are not new, but they are still rare special equipment on new cars. You’re most likely to find one on a luxury car or exotic [Mazda is the one popular OEM who has incorporated an HUD into several models]. Originally developed as a pilot’s aid, HUD project vital information on a transparent screen or on the windshield directly in the driver’s line of sight, usually confined to the lower section. Navdy is an aftermarket HUD that can be added to any vehicle with an open On-Board Diagnostics II [OBD-II] port – that is, any car built since January 1, 1996. The standard port provides access for vehicle diagnostics. Technicians use an OBD-II tool to find trouble codes that tell them about the condition and operation of the engine, emissions controls and electrical system. The port can also power devices like the Navdy and other gadgets, which turns out to be quite handy. The OBD-II port is usually located beneath the dash, a relatively easy-to-access spot.

I’ve been using a Navdy Head-Up Display for a few weeks on my 2003 Ford F-150 pickup truck. My truck is a very basic XL work truck model. It has hand-crank windows and manual door locks – we’re talking basic. It took about 30 minutes to install Navdy. The OBD-II port on my truck is at the base of the center stack. I used the included plug, wire, wire-routing buttons, and Navdy base to achieve a clean installation without tools, hiding the wire beneath my dashboard and running it in the gap between the dash and A-pillar. I used the 3M adhesive patch to secure Navdy’s base to the top of the dash above the instrument panel. The Navdy kit included two bases – one tall and one squat – to help get the unit into the right position for viewing while driving. The squat mount worked just right. A battery-powered controller, called “The Dial,” straps on to the steering wheel. It is a thumb-wheel dial with a single center button, used to scroll through menus and select options.

The Navdy unit itself snaps into place on the base with a magnetic connector like Apple’s MagSafe power cords, and completes the electrical union. I downloaded the latest version of Navdy’s iOS app onto my iPhone 6s [there’s an Android version available, too], and followed instructions to pair my smartphone to the Navdy via Bluetooth. I also paired the Navdy to my Bluetooth-capable audio system. After a simple, step-by-step setup procedure, I was in business. I now had a functioning HUD in my 24-year-old truck. Complimentary same-day installation is available through Enjoy, a tech service company in select areas including San Francisco Bay, Los Angeles, Chicago, Manhattan, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta and Miami.

Navdy is more than just a HUD. Information is projected onto a small polycarbonate screen [approximately 3 inches tall by 4 inches wide]. I can look through or over the screen to the road ahead, and quickly lower my glance to see the information that it’s displaying without taking my eyes completely off of the road ahead. The display is in full color, and is visible day or night without dominating the view. I can use my regular clear lens glasses or my polarized prescription sunglasses, depending on the time of day and light conditions.

Navdy uses Google Maps to provide navigation assistance, projecting maps and turn-by-turn directions in real time. Punching the center button on The Dial summons Siri on my iPhone, and I can input destination information by voice, as well as accessing other Siri functions. I can initiate and receive phone calls with The Dial, too, or I can use hand gestures – swiping left dismisses a call; swiping right accepts an incoming call. Navdy can also display vehicle information like speed, rpm and direction of travel, and it can act as an interface to iTunes, podcasts, text messages and email.

After a few weeks of use, I’ve become quite accustomed to Navdy on my daily drives. I like the fact that the Navdy unit itself is quite compact and easy to install and remove. I take it off of the dash when I park and stash it in my glove compartment, then snap it back into place when I’m ready to drive again. I live in a very congested area of Los Angeles, and I really appreciate the convenient and safe access to navigation and telephone information without having to take my eyes off of the road and the crazy drivers I encounter each day. I never expected to have such a high-tech tool in my old work truck, and I have to admit that the cool factor is also a selling point. My passengers are all wowed at the Navdy, and I like that.

Navdy is available directly from the company’s website for $499, and can also be purchased at Best Buy or through Amazon.com and other online retailers.

Is Google Maps as good as a sat nav?

Google Maps is a solid all-rounder but lacks the specific features of some others. Ultimately, do consider trying different nav apps for different occasions if one has particularly appropriate features – they are free, after all.
