Hai loại này khác nhau và có ảnh hưởng rất nhiều đến ngữ pháp trong câu.
Những danh từ chỉ được dùng ở số nhiều: Trousers (quần tây), scissors (kéo), jeans (quần jean), shorts (quần sooc), pyjamas (đồ ngủ), tights (tất giấy), glasses/specacles (kính đeo mắt), socks (đôi vớ/ tất), shoes (đôi giày), shorts (quần sooc). Có thể dùng cụm từ "A pair of", với những danh từ này để tạo thành danh từ đếm được ở số ít: a pair of trousers, a pair of scissors. Tôi cần một cái quần tây mới. Những danh từ sau đây tận cùng bằng "s" nhưng thường không phải là danh từ số nhiều: Mathematics (toán), Physics (vật lí), Economics (kinh tế học), Athletics (điền kinh), Gymnastics (thể dục dụng cụ), News (tin tức). Species: Loài. A species of bird (một loài chim). 200 species of bird (200 loài chim). Các danh từ số ít lại được dùng với động từ số nhiều: Government (chính phủ), staff (nhân viên), team (đội), family (gia đình), audience (khán giả), commitee (ủy ban). The government want to reduce taxes. Chính phủ muốn giảm thuế. The staff aren't happy with their working conditons. Nhân viên không hài lòng với điều kiện làm việc mới của họ. Danh từ số nhiều với động từ số ít, khi nói về một số tiền, thời gian, hay khoảng cách. Five thousand pounds was stolen in the robbery. Năm ngàn bảng đã bị mất trong vụ đánh cắp. Three years is a long time to be without a job. Ba năm thất nghiệp là một thời gian dài. Note: Dùng động từ số nhiều với tên các đội thể thao. Scotland are playing France in football next week.
