1.1. Định nghĩa và cách dùng thì quá khứ tiếp diễn

Thì quá khứ tiếp diễn là một trong 12 thì trong ngữ pháp tiếng Anh, được dùng khi diễn tả một hành động đang diễn ra tại một mốc thời điểm xác định trong quá khứ.

Cụ thể hơn về những hành động đang diễn ra thì đó là:

• Diễn tả hành động đang xảy ra tại một thời điểm trong quá khứ.

E.g.: I was eating watermelon at 11 pm last night. [Tôi đang ăn dưa hấu lúc 11 giờ đêm qua.]

• Diễn tả hành động xảy ra đồng thời với hành động khác trong quá khứ.

E.g.: When my mother was going out, I was sleeping at home this morning. [Lúc mẹ tôi đi ra ngoài thì tôi đang ngủ ở nhà vào sáng nay.]

• Diễn tả hành động A đang xảy ra thì có hành động B xen vào.

E.g.: My teacher was explaining when I came in. [Giáo viên của tôi đang giải thích thì tôi đi vào.]

• Diễn tả hành động lặp đi lặp lại nhiều lần trong quá khứ và dẫn tới làm phiền người khác.

E.g.: Our teacher was always complaining about us. [Giáo viên chúng tôi luôn phàn nàn về chúng tôi.]

1.2. Cấu trúc thì quá khứ tiếp diễn

A: Yes, S + be. / No, S + be not. E.g.: “Were you doing homework at 10 p.m last night?” [Bạn đã đang làm bài lúc 10 giờ tối qua đúng không?] “No, I was not”. [Không, tớ không làm].

1.3. Dấu hiệu nhận biết thì quá khứ tiếp diễn

Các trạng từ chỉ thời gian trong quá khứ kèm theo thời gian xác địnhat + giờ + thời gian trong quá khứ [at 10 p.m last night…] at this time + thời gian trong quá khứ [at this time 3 weeks ago…] in + năm trong quá khứ [in 2000, in 2005…] in the past [trong quá khứ]Trong câu xuất hiện “when” khi diễn tả một hành động đang xảy ra thì có hành động khác xen vào.E.g.: When the kids were playing in the room, their moms were cooking in the kitchen. [Khi lũ trẻ đang chơi trong phòng thì các bà mẹ của chúng đang nấu ăn trong bếp].Diễn tả hành động đang xảy ra tại thời điểm xác định trong quá khứ.While [trong khi], When [khi], at the time [vào lúc],… E.g.: My father was reading a paper at that time. [Bố tôi đang đọc một tờ báo vào lúc đó].
