Logo Euro 2024

The next edition of one of the world’s premiere soccer tournaments is still about three years away, but the hype for Euro 2024 kicked off this week with the unveiling of the tournament’s logo.

UEFA launched the logo on Tuesday, Oct. 5, with an elaborate live-streamed laser light show emanating from the Olympiastadion in Berlin. The logo features the European Championship trophy in a shield that follows the shape of the Olympiastadion roof. Twenty-four multicoloured stripes [one for each team participating in the tournament] radiate out from behind the trophy, representing the flags of UEFA’s 55 member associations.

“It is great to see the logo of UEFA Euro 2024 come to life at the iconic Olympiastadion. From now on, the tournament has a brand identity which reflects the ambition we have together with the host association and host cities: a Euro which is truly for everyone,” said UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin on UEFA’s website. “For one month, we will be united by football in the heart of Europe.”

The tournament’s slogan, “United by Football. Vereint im Herzen Europas,” also reinforces the themes of unity, togetherness and inclusion in the brand.

“Euro 2024 will be a Euro for all and we look forward to welcoming fans from across Europe and the world to Germany in the summer of 2024 to celebrate a great football party together. The logo and brand identity for the tournament convey this message perfectly,” added tournament director Philipp Lahm.

Unlike Euro 2020 — where matches were spread out in cities across Europe — all 51 Euro 2024 matches will be contested in Germany. Each of the 10 host cities will have its own logo highlighting a famous local landmark. The host cities and stadiums include:

  • Berlin: Olympiastadion Berlin [current capacity: 70,033]
  • Cologne: Stadium Cologne [46,922]
  • Dortmund: BVB Stadion Dortmund [61,524]
  • Dusseldorf: ARENA Dusseldorf [46,264]
  • Frankfurt: ARENA Frankfurt [48,057]
  • Gelsenkirchen: ARENA AufSchalke [49,471]
  • Hamburg: Volksparkstadion Hamburg [50,215]
  • Leipzig: Stadium Leipzig [46,635]
  • Munich: ARENA Munich [66,026]
  • Stuttgart: ARENA Stuttgart [50,998]

Munich was the only German city to host matches in Euro 2020. While the country hosted the World Cup in 2006, this is the first time Germany has hosted a European Championship tournament since reunification in 1990 [West Germany hosted in 1988].

Organizers have not yet determined which stadium will host the Euro 2024 final. Games will be played in June and July 2024. The full match schedule should be finalized in early 2022, and the final tournament draw will take place in December 2023.

Germany on Tuesday unveiled the logo for football’s 2024 European Championship during a ceremony with a light show in the stadium that will hold the final.

Some guests and media were invited to Berlin’s Olympiastadion for the UEFA launch, though no fans were present on a damp evening in the German capital.

The logo features an outline of the Henri Delaunay Cup — the bulbous tournament trophy — set on a coloured oval outline that resembles the Olympiastadion’s roof. It features colours from the flags of UEFA’s 55 member nations, set in 24 slices around the trophy to represent the 24 teams that will ultimately qualify for the tournament in Germany.

Organisers said the brand will promote a tournament where diversity is celebrated, and everyone should feel welcome. The tournament’s slogan “United by Football. Vereint im Herzen Europas” — or “United at the Heart of Europe” — is meant to convey a message of togetherness and inclusion.

‘Brand identity’

Logos for each of the 10 host cities — Berlin, Cologne, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg, Leipzig, Munich and Stuttgart — were also presented with each featuring a famous local landmark. Berlin’s, for example, features the Brandenburg Gate.

“From now on, the tournament has a brand identity which reflects the ambition we have together with the host association and host cities,” UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said.

The tournament is due to be played in June and July 2024 with the match schedule to be confirmed next year.

Germany hosted the World Cup in 2006, with the final held in the refurbished Olympiasstadion. The stadium was originally built for the 1936 Olympic Games hosted by Nazi Germany.

West Germany also hosted the World Cup in 1974 and the European Championship in 1988.
